Federal Political Party Platform Overlaps

As one would expect, there is always a little overlap between political parties on some planks of their platforms. I would like to see some feedback from the field, Greens in general, but from former paying members of other political parties who are now paying members of GPC in particular, discussing the areas that Green platform issues overlap those of the other parties.

Discussions should include:
- where do Green beliefs and platform goals
exceed those of another party. Where do we
need improvement?
- where do Green beliefs and platform goals
fall short (in the humble opinion of the posting
person) of those of another party. Where do
we need improvement?

Perhaps we should have separate discussions for each individual party (i.e. Green vs. Conservative, Green vs. Liberal, Green vs. NDP)

So this first blog topic is to get feedback on how to proceed.

I'm not, and never have been a member of a political party other than the Greens, which puts me outside of your target demographic.

A big difference between the Greens and other parties is that we explicitly state our values. We don't do a very good job at connecting those values to our policy or platform, but at least we say what they are. Other parties leave it up to the individual to guess what the party's values are.

I think we need improvement on the depth of our issues. Our new leader is doing a great job of pounding home the environmental concerns. Even if she wanted to talk about something different, she'd have a hard time doing it: our platform lacks the numbers and background research we need to talk about it seriously.

Having said that, I don't think that other parties have those numbers (or, if they do, they keep them close to their chest). We're different, however. The whole idea behind our party is that we look at all of the options, and find the one that best fits our values. We have to be able to enunciate why our platform choices are the best possible choice.

This is the first time I have ever joined a political party, and Green it is.
The big task as I see it is to trumpet the strengths of Green platform planks that match, more or less, the planks of the other political parties, and try in this way to create a pocket full of ammunition to use when discussing with Conservative, Liberal or NDP members or voters why they can get everything with the Green party that they thought they were getting with their previous first choice.

Right on, Genevieve.
Have you considered using one of the Meet-Up groups as a forum to discuss your issues? There is a list of local meet-up groups at http://www.meetup.com/cities/ca/ON/Ottawa/?a=cn1_cn3 but if none of these is appropriate, then you could create your own Meet-Up group at http://www.meetup.com/create/?ic=sn1
Meet-up groups generally attract like-minded people to discuss the issues of interest. You could create a Kanata-area only group to discuss social issues of importance to you (both pro and con, of course, since we aim to be socially responsible), and advertise it here in the Blog. A summary of discussions from such meetings would be usefull to report to other Green members (and the general public) here in the Blog.
Generally, Meet-up group membership starts slowly, but grows steadily as people learn about the group.

Hi Genevieve

I appreciate the need to educate Green members on the intricacies of the issue you raise, however cut and paste of an unformated text email is difficult to read, and I found it both time consuming and also that I begin to forget the threads of information as I struggle with the format.
I think we should all remember when posting here (and in any blog) to voice our opinions in the comment of the blog, then include a link to any relelvent articles.
